Barbados

Barbados - like many other Carribean island nations - was originally inhabited by natives and was later discovered by the Spanish and Portugese. The original name of the island was probably Ichirouganaim but the roots of the word Barbados are still controversially discussed among linguists and historians. However, the official head of the government is the Queen of England since Barbados is part of the British commonwealth. The government is a parliamentary democracy and the nation has a population of approximately 280,000. It declared its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 but maintains strong trade and political relations with the UK. On our cruise in 2008 we took a tour around the island and visited a church that was said to have been haunted by ghosts on a crypt - that's where the photo below was taken.
