Gainesville

The place I've lived from August 2004 to December 2007 is a small city two hours north of Orlando. Gainesville hosts one of the biggest public universities in the state of Florida, the University of Florida. I attended this school to work on a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy, equivalent to the German "Promotion") in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a MS (Master of Science, equivalent to a German "Diplom") in Forensic Toxicology with a minor in Statistics. Although Gainesville never before came to my attention, due to the university there is an increasing cultural impact ranging from operas, famous musicians and artists, and a lot of lectures on current topics. The Florida Museum of Natural History hosts one of the biggest collections of butterflies in the world and has an outdoor observatory with thousands of living butterflies. Gainesville is quite liberal, but as soon as you leave the city limits, it's getting very rural. Within a radius of 100 miles or 2 hours by car there is nothing - the nearest cities are Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville. Despite this isolation I really enjoy living in Gainesville and met some nice people that I have the fortune to call friends.
