Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is probably one of the most unique geological sites that shows over 2 billion years of earth history revealed to our eyes. The Colorado River carved his way to form the Canyon - it is estimated that more than 500,000 tons of sediments was washed away on an average day. This has now decreased to 80,000 tons, but it is still a tremendous amount - and why the river looks always kind of dirty. The plateau tells us a lot about the different stages of earths' geology - through the ice ages and the inland sea that was formed on the North-American continent. We hiked along the south rim for half a day and then took a bus tour to the watch tower. The bus driver told us that for those who believe in evolution the Grand Canyon is around 2 billion years old, and for those who believe in creationism it is only 6,000 years old - the first step towards integrating creationism in science classes.
