Tokushima

The city and prefecture of Tokushima is located in the very north-east of the island of Shikoku south of the main island. I stayed here for nearly 2 months during the summer in 2005, working at the University of Tokushima, and exploring the surrounding. Hiro, the postdoctoral fellow at my host department, was a great help in organizing everything for me - including most of the translational work between students, faculty, and me. As Tokushima has not such a huge population of foreigners, for the first time I experienced the strange feeling of people looking at me on the street. I guess it is the same feeling that people from Arabian and Asian countries sometimes experience in North America or Europe and it was both a weird and very interesting experience for me as it helps me to understand the feeling of hostility better. Although I couldn't complain at all about the hospitality I was offered during my stay in Tokushima. I really made some great friends there - from all over the world. The Japanese hospitality is really taken seriously and it is considered rude to not accept help or an invitation. It is just the nature of Japanese to be friendly and do whatever they can to make the guest feel comfortable.
